Pastoral Leadership Program
The mobile Leadership Pastoral is a formation program for lay leaders and open to pastors and professionals in ministry. It is offered in two phases during a three year period in collaboration with the diocese where the program is located.
Phase I: Encounter and Identity (1st Year)
Description:
Phase I is a year of preparation for the participating diocese, the mentors and student candidates in preparation for Phase II.
The content of the dynamic one day sessions emphasizes the key course objectives in Phase II: Identity, Faith/Culture, Biblical Tradition, Church, Communion and Mission, The call to “new leadership.”
Objectives
- Agree on the budget, co-responsibilities and calendar.
- Identify and prepare mentors.
- Ferment the sense of full membership in the Church among the student candidates.
- Motivate interest among the student candidates in preparation for leadership roles.
- Raise the value and self-esteem of the students’ faith, culture and history.
- Recognize the God of Jesus Christ situated in Vatican II.
- Present the call of Christ’s mission and service to the Kingdom of God.
Way of Proceeding:
- Invitation from the Diocese.
- Dialogue with diocesan leadership toward full understanding and collaboration.
- Preparation, Performance and Evaluation with the mentors.
- Evaluation of program at regular intervals with diocesan offices.
- Preparation of student candidates for commitment to the 18 course two year program.
Theological Method
Voice faith/cultural experience – Dialogue – Discern – Decide – Plan/Act – Evaluate – Celebrate.
Goal
- Preparation for Phase I.
Theology
- Encounter with God of Jesus Christ of Vatican II.
- Encounter with neighbor: Hispanic and non Hispanic.

- One whose service to others and faith reflexion signal a call to formation.

Phase II: Communion and Mission (2nd and 3rd Year)
Description:
This is a formation program of 18 courses during a two year period which are accredited by the Federation of Pastoral Institutes, F.I.P. Based within Vatican II and the call from the U.S. Bishops for Hispanic leadership formation, the courses intend to form a “new leadership” in communion with the mission of the Church today.
The 18 course formation program is offered monthly on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at a designated diocesan location. In addition there are monthly evening integration seminars at students’ homes, theology reflection session and a pastoral leadership practicum during the 3rd year.
Objectives:
- To critically appreciate one’s own cultural values and those of other cultures.
- To read the Word of God conscious of one’s own faith/culture and history.
- To reinforce self-value and confidence.
- To situate oneself within the history and cultures of today’s world: Locally and globally.
- To live and promote pastoral de conjunto, communion and mission in the church.
- To evangelize by way of popular Catholicism.
- To be able to serve in a culturally diverse church and society.
Way of Proceeding:
- Participation in monthly courses.
- Participation in monthly integration seminars.
- Elaboration of pastoral leadership project.
- Participation in evaluation processes.

ADVANCED PASTORAL LEADERSHIP Pilot Program
This ICLM pilot project is being constructed in collaboration with theologians at the University of Notre Dame. It is a professional leadership formation offered at a masters level. The program’s intent is to open the way for Hispanic/Latino leadership who enter the program both as professionals and non professionals. An image that helps to reflect this program is cupula y camino, i.e., the university and parish.
Foundational to this new program is the Church’s call to respond to the Hispanic/Latino potential in the Midwest. The Advanced Pastoral Leadership program recognizes the gift of the Hispanic presence for church ministry and the promotion of social justice in society.
The two year program consists of three consecutives summer courses of 5 days, Monday thru Friday, two winter courses from Friday thru Sunday and one Leadership Practicum Project.
